That is what it is at our house..birds and birds. No bees here. I am amazed at how quickly Kennedy has grown. She is on the verge of preteen. Gormah is right there with her. We are not ready. Where is our little girl? They are growing too fast and I am not sure we can keep up.
A couple of days ago, the question in the van was the dreaded "How are babies made?". I am pretty direct. I do not shy away from sex conversation but it is different when explaining baby manufacturing to your daughters. We also knew it could lead Kennedy to wonder how she was conceived. I told the girls we would discuss this when we had more than 2 minutes before they had to get out of the van to go to school. Not the best parting conversation before a school day. Plus, I needed Lori.
So last night, Lori armed with a cute little kid friendly video she had used in her classroom and me wanting to do this in a way that the girls could not tease us about when they were adults, took on the issue of baby making the best we could.
So, the conversation went about as well as one can hope. Kennedy noticed the lack of bees in her scenario and asked. Lori and I had imagined this conversation with her many times. Never in my wildest dreams did it ever go the way it did in reality. We tell Kennedy how she was conceived. We show her the information on her donor. We look at the ultrasound pictures. I am nervous about what she will think. She notices on her donor information that he is English. She is thrilled. She is joyous that she is part English. Lori and I are looking at her like she is an alien. Let me give a little background. Kennedy is intrigued by Native Americans. She has been since she was about three years old. She has read about Native Americans and English settlers and it has been an ongoing theme for her. My biological father was part Cherokee. She was equally thrilled when she discovered she was a fraction Native American. Okay, so back the the bird/bird conversation...in the middle of her joy of discovering she was part English she looks at us very somber and says..that is why I struggle so much. I have the Indian part of me fighting with the English part of me. That is why I have a hard time sometimes. Umm...okay. She felt her whole world come together and clash at the same moment. Lori and I had been to busy preparing our sex talk that we could not respond to this. She was too much in her head and inner turmoil to notice anyway.
So that is how our sex/conception talk ended. Everyone went to bed and we hoped we did not do more harm than good.
