Let me start with some background information. Kennedy goes to a pretty conservative school where most people are republicans, most are conservative christian and most are white. She is changing schools because it has not been the best environment for her. Her current school was listed as one of the least diverse schools in the system. She hates that she is different because she is often the target of harassment. She also loves that she is different because she gets a lot of attention. She recently got a certificate for having the strongest convictions. She is strong and will stand up to just about anyone. She was tired of hearing her friends talk badly about other religions, particularly the Jewish faith. Today, she announces she has been working on her acting skills while testing her friends. I always feel a little fear whenever she makes announcements like this because with her you just never know what she is up to. She continues to ramble, as my mind is racing with where this conversation is going. She is giddy as she announces that, for the last couple of months, she has told all of her friends that she is Jewish. Never mind the blond hair and blue eyes. She continues to talk in one long, run on sentence that she wanted to test her friends to see if they would treat her different. As if a lesbian run, transcultural family is not enough fodder, why not throw in Judaism for good measure. She is still talking so I am trying to follow her as she praises herself for her good acting skills, how she taught all of her friends a lesson by showing them that Jewish people are no different, how she now knows who is nice and who is not, how smart she is for coming up with this plan and how she was the perfect one to do this because she went to a Jewish preschool for a year and a half. She was so busy praising her scheme that she did not even need me to comment on her double life, which was good because I do not think I could have spoken at the time.
Since then, I have had time to sit with her revelation and I have to say I am pretty impressed with our girl. Impressed and scared.
