I often post about Gormah after a really bad episode so tonight I wanted to post while things are good. Gormah has periods of 10, 11, 12 and lately up to 14 days of being good. She is almost like living with a volcano. She is beautiful and when not erupting you admire her beauty and marvel at her strength. The problem is you never know when she will erupt and destroy everything around her.
We have found an incredible therapist for her. She does not feel like she has attachment issues and I agree. She is attaching with us and with her siblings. She is showing remorse for her actions. She has made improvements but there are times when feelings and actions are beyond her control. She has to erupt.
I do not want to go into detail on the blog, but the things she has endured make our heads spin. The therapist feels that she has never processed her trauma and anything can trigger it. The therapist is using a discipline called EMDR ( for information go to emdr.com) to help her process her trauma. We feel hopeful and know this therapist and this technique have helped many people.
Gormah is really, really smart. She reads and writes on the highest level for her grade. She gets the concepts behind the learning. Her teacher uses words like "brilliant" and "angel". It is good for us to hear because I think she leaves her angel wings at school. I am just glad she has them somewhere.
She is funny. Not just chicken cross the road funny but double edged, impersonation funny. She impersonates us, her teacher (my favorite) and anyone else in her life. If I am looking at her she mimics the look back at me and I feel I am looking in a mirror.
She is constantly writing and drawing the sweetest notes and pictures to all of us. She is always making something for someone.
She is a gifted athlete. She is graceful and beautiful. When she laughs it is a soulful laugh that is contagious even when she is laughing about something she should not be laughing at. She talks nonstop. She is thoughtful and insightful.
I am hopeful that things will continue to get better. Lori and I chant daily that "everything will be okay". I cannot help but think what if it doesn't. Can you stop a volcano from erupting? Then she laughs and we feel lucky to be her parents.
